What 'Credits Never Expire' Actually Means (And Which Studios Offer It)

Activity studio credit policies range from generous to punishing — and the difference is not always visible on the enrollment page. Most parents sign up, start classes, and only discover the expiration policy when they try to use a credit and find it gone.

Understanding the spectrum before you enroll gives you real leverage: the ability to ask better questions, choose better studios, and set up a recovery system that actually works for your family's schedule.

The credit expiration spectrum

Tier 1: Credits never expire (or expire with the enrollment)

Some studios — typically smaller, relationship-oriented ones — issue credits that remain valid as long as your child is enrolled. Miss a class, get a credit, use it anytime.

This is the most family-friendly policy because it accommodates the actual rhythm of life: busy seasons, travel months, illness streaks.

What to ask: "If my child misses a class and we receive a credit, when does that credit expire?" A "never" or "end of your enrollment" answer is tier 1.

Tier 2: End of session (6–10 weeks)

Many studios align credit expiration with their program sessions. Spring session credits expire at spring session end. Fall session credits expire at the winter break.

This is workable if you are aware of it. The trap: sessions often end during busy family periods (holidays, spring break, end-of-school). Credits pile up and expire exactly when you have no time to use them.

Tier 3: 30 days

A calendar month window. Reasonable on paper; tight in practice. Illness, travel, and schedule conflicts frequently consume that 30-day window before you book the makeup.

Tier 4: 14 days

Two weeks is the tightest common policy. Most problematic during busy stretches — vacation, back-to-school chaos, holiday weeks. A 14-day window that includes a holiday or school break is effectively a 7-day window.

Tier 5: No credits (punish absences)

Some studios have strict no-credit policies. You pay per enrollment period; absences are losses. This policy makes operational sense for studios with high demand and waitlists but is particularly costly for families with irregular schedules.

How to find this out before you sign

Ask during your trial or tour, not at enrollment:

  • "What is your makeup and credit policy for missed classes?"
  • "How long do makeup credits stay valid?"
  • "Do you have any illness or travel exceptions?"
  • "What happens to unused credits at the end of the session?"

Studios with good policies will answer directly. Studios with poor policies will hedge. The evasiveness itself is information.

Frame it as scheduling, not criticism: "We've had a busy few weeks and are having trouble finding a makeup slot — would it be possible to extend by one week?"
